Rare Russo Japanese War Corporal Himeno Kutani Army Sake Cup

Regular price $0

This is an antique Japanese military sake cup, decorated with a soldier carrying a couple bombs climbing up a hill. The words on the right are "Corporal Himeno", and on the bottom of the cup "Discharge Commemoration" with the name of the kiln Kutani in the base. Himeno was a corporal during the Russo Japanese War who supposedly took out a gun emplacement on a hill by sacrificing himself during the siege of Port Arthur. The story is similar to that of the later Shanghai Incident, and this cup commemorates the event. The statue you see on the postcard (not part of the sale) is a memorial to him.

Condition: Excellent - some fading of the colors

Size: 2" across
