This is a rare antique Japanese military commemorative bowl, made for the occasion of either the naming or the commissioning of the public donated airplane #38. During the 1930s and onwards there was a program to have public groups or companies to pool donated money to help build airplanes for the Japanese army. The bowl is made of silver gilt metal, decorated with a star in the center and has a nice decorative pattern around the rim. There are no words on the bowl itself. It comes with original, custom made box. The box is stamped with the design of a plane and two AA guns. The plane has the words "Patriot 38 (Kyoto)" on the wings and "Showa 7th Year June" on the tailwings, and the big word "Congratulations". This is for #38, fairly early in the program, and was donated by the people of Kyoto. The plane was a Nakajima Type 91 fighter. The ribbon inside the box says "Made by Okano Precious Metal shop of Kyoto". 

Over a few thousand planes were made using this sort of donation. There's a very detailed Japanese webpage that lists all known donations and their origins.

Condition: The bowl has some discoloration on the surface - please see pictures. It seems to be some of the plating wearing off revealing the copper underneath. The box has fairly minor wear on the exterior, except for the bottom
