Very Rare Antique Japanese Military WW2 Holy War French Indochina Lacquer Army Sake Cups
This is a set of 3 antique Japanese military sake cups. On the front of each cup is a tiger each with a phrase "Battle of Mirrors" - I don't actually know what this refers to. The three tigers is a possible reference to the codename "Tora! Tora! Tora!' which of course is the code for the attack on Pearl Harbor. I am guessing the phrase "Battle of Mirrors" is some kind of phrase used in the unit in question, or maybe reference to something else, perhaps even an inside joke/lore.
The back of the cups are each different, listing the battles that the unit and presumably the person receiving the cup participated in. The three cups all have the common phrase "Commemoration of Participation in Holy War" and "2nd Guards Infantry" with the soldier's name Ishida. Holy War refers to the Pacific War after the Japanese declaration of war against the US.
For the battles listed I'll list them in order:
Smallest cup - Wengying campaign, combat around Naxiangxu
Middle cup - Binyang campaign, Jiangnan campaign
Largest cup - 2nd Jiangnan campaign, entrance to French Indochina
The 2nd guards regiment did fight in all the battles listed. Naxiangxu is a small combat in the Guangxi province, bordering current day Vietnam.
Condition: The smallest cup is in mint condition. The middle cup is slightly discoloured. The largest cup has a small chip at around 2 o'clock
Size: 3", 3.75", and 4.25"
