Very Rare Antique Japanese Photo Transfer Qingdao Garrison Diederich's Stone Army Sake Cup

Regular price $0

This is a very rare antique Japanese military sake cup, decorated with a photo of the Diederich's Stone which was a stone carved into the Signal Hill (Japanese renamed it Kamio Hill) in the Chinese city of Qingdao. From 1897 to 1914, Qingdao was controlled by Germany, until it was taken by the Japanese in WW1. Diederich's stone was there to commemorate the German capture of the area. The Japanese then installed their own stone carving next to the Diederich's stone - you can see it on the bottom right of the photo beneath the German double eagle.

The words on the cup are "Qingdao Garrison Commemoration". The words under the picture are "On the slope of Kamio Hill is the carving commemorating German capture of Kiautschou Bay. Our military's carving for commemorating the day of our capture has also been carved"

Qingdao related cups are quite rare - Japan only held onto the city until 1922 as one of the last pieces of territories resolved in the aftermath of WW1, when the city was returned to China. It was only for a period of about 8 years when Japan held onto the place.

Condition: Excellent - light fading of the words at the bottom

Size: 2.75" tall x 2.5" across
