Antique Japanese Military 1892 Captain Fukushima Euraisa Solo Journey Army Dish
This is an antique Japanese dish, decorated with a detailed, traditionally styled landscape with a man on his horse in some heavy winter gear. This is a reference to Captain (later Major) Fukushima Yasumasa's trip from Berlin to Vladivostok, which took him over a year to complete. He did it by himself, ostensibly as an adventure but also a military reconnaissance trip to check on the progress of the Trans-Siberian Railway, as he believed Russia was going to be Japan's chief enemy. He was much celebrated upon his return to Japan.
