Antique Japanese Military 1938 Hinomaru March Lyrics Soldier Army Cup
This is a rare 1938 or later Japanese military cup, either a large sake cup or a small tea cup (dual use, really). It's decorated with a soldier holding his rifle. The words in the box are "Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shinbun", a newspaper based in Tokyo. The words on the left of the soldier are "Hinomaru March", the name of a song composed in 1938. The Nichi Nichi Shinbun had a competition for a new patriotic song, and the lyrics here are for the winner. The verses here are verses 3-5, I am guessing the cup came in a pair and verses 1-2 are on the another cup. The Nichi Nichi Shinbun merged with the Osaka Mainichi Shinbun to form the present-day Mainichi Shinbun, which is still in print.
