This is an antique Japanese military tea cup, decorated with a star, a symbol for division (I think - the thing on the left) and the words "54th Infantry" "Six Weeks Callup Commemoration". The soldier's name Taniguchi is at the bottom, along with the stamped words "Bizen" for bizen-ware, a type of pottery famous in Japan.
