The Iwate was of the Izumo class of armored cruisers, built in the UK and served in combat during the Russo Japanese War and WW1. It then got assigned to the training squadron and went on long distance voyages with other older cruisers such as the Asama, Yakumo, etc. This would be for one of these voyages. Iwate survived until July 1945 when it was sunk by American bombers in Kure.
