Antique Japanese Military Veterans Association Decorated Pair of Shells Award
This is a pair of shells, made with brass or something similar, and decorated each with a calligraphic phrase. The left has the words "Loyal and Brave, Righteous and Fierce". The one on the right "Doing your utmost to repay the country". The calligraphy for each are done by Army General Suzuki Soroku - also embossed on the back. The other phrase on the two canisters are Imperial Veterans Association Tokyo Unified Association. These two shells are made for decoration, and come with dedicated and custom made wooden bases (each only fit on one and not the other). The tips can be taken off - they can hold stuff, maybe tobacco or something like that.
The two shells come in original box, and the stamp on the underside of the lid is also Imperial Veterans Association Tokyo Unified Association.
Suzuki Soroku was the army chief of staff from 1926-1930. He retired that year and became the president of the Veterans Association for the next six years - this would date these canisters to somewhere between 1930 and 1936. They would've been a gift to someone high ranking, as these are very nicely made items with beautiful craftsmanship and would've been quite expensive.
