Antique Japanese Military WW1 Germany Conquest Pewter Army Sake Cup
This is an antique Japanese military sake cup, decorated with a star and some cherry blossoms. The words on the cup are "Germany Conquest Victorious Return Commemoration". The back of the cup has the maker's mark for Suzuhan - probably the most famous pewter ware maker in Japan. This cup refers to Japan's involvement in WW1 when it fought German forces in its colonial holdings in China in Shandong province. Japan took these areas over after the war, causing great resentment among the Chinese and indirectly laid another path to war with China twenty years later.
