Beautiful Makie Lacquer Set of Five Russo Japanese War Land Battles Commemoration Dishes
This is a very unique set of five dishes commemorating five different land battle events during the Russo Japanese War. The dishes are each decorated with a branch of cherry blossom and a banner. Each of the banner have a date and a place of capture. They are as follows:
1) Meiji 37th Year (1905) July 9th - Capture of Yiping
2) Meiji 37th Year August 17th - Capture of Liaoyang
3) Meiji 38th Year (1906) March 19th - Capture of Kaiyuan
4) Meiji 38th Year March 21st - Capture of Changtu Prefecture
5) Meiji 38th Year March 31st - Capture of Jinhua Garrison
These are all places in what is now Liaoning Province, near the city of Shenyang and to its north. I suspect this set may have consisted of more dishes but these are the ones that survived. Nevertheless it's a nice and rare set in beautiful condition for a unit's progress through NE China during the Russo Japanese War.
