Antique Japanese 1919 Imperial Guards Bestowed Marksmanship Competition Winner Lacquer Sake Cup
This is an antique Japanese army sake cup, made with lacquered wood and decorated with the symbol for a marksmanship award consisting of crossed rifles over a cherry blossom. The words on the front are "Imperial Bestowal Commemoration". On the back are the words "Taisho 8th Year (1919) September 25th Honorary Marksmanship Competition Winner Commemoration". The words in the middle are "1st Imperial Guards, 7th Battalion". The emperor (or the regent at the time, the future Showa emperor) probably presided over this since this was the first regiment of the guards division, thus the phrase imperial bestowal on the front.
