Rare Antique Japanese Military 1934 Tokyo Army Hall Grand Opening Commemoration Lacquer Sake Cups
This is a rare set of lacquer military sake cups, decorated each with a picture of the "Gunjin kaikan" or "Military Personnel Hall". The words on the back of the cup are "Gift" "Gunjin Kaikan" and "Showa 9th Year March". This was the month it was officially finished and opened on March 25th, and was used as a recreational facility for military personnel in Tokyo, and I believe it also offered lodging (although most likely it's really just for officers). Whoever received these cups probably attended the opening ceremony - someone with some status.
After 1945 GHQ took over this building and called it "Army Hall" and it was used as a recreational and lodging facility for US army personnel. After that it became a public use facility hosting events and such. The building was damaged in the 2011 earthquake and is now slated for redevelopment, only keeping a part of its facade. You can see pictures of the building at this wikipedia article.
Condition: Mint. The smallest cup's picture doesn't have the silvery outlines the other two cups do.
