Rare Antique Japanese Military Captured Cruiser Aso Sports Meeting Navy Sake Cup
This is an interesting piece - the cup is decorated with an anchor and some cherry blossoms and a flag. The words are "Warship Aso Sports Meet Commemoration" and underneath "March Taisho 5th Year". Taisho 5th year was 1916. This would suggest that some kind of sports meet was held on the ship and this was commemorating the event. The warship Aso was actually the cruiser Bayan belonging to the Russian navy. It was sunk in Port Arthur during the siege and floated by the Japanese and resurrected as the Aso. It continued to serve in the IJN until 1920, when it got transitioned to be a minelayer, and then was finally struck from the navy list in 1930.
