Very Rare 1927 Shanghai Massacre April 12 Incident SNLF Japanese Navy Helmet Sake Cup
This is a very rare Japanese navy sake cup, decorated with a ship and an anchor and flag, and the words "Showa 2nd Year Shanghai Incident" and the person's name Yamazaki. The exterior of the cup is shaped like a helmet with a cherry blossom at the front and an anchor as the base of the cup. The Showa 2nd Year (1927) incident in Shanghai was actually a military coup by Chiang Kai-Shek in clearing out the Communists and other leftist elements in the Kuomintang. Chiang launched the attack and the Communists fought back, but were no match. Foreign troops, in the end totaling about 4000 Japanese troops from SNLF units pulled from Yokosuka and Sasebo, as well as the marine detachments on the cruiser Tone, were dispatched to Shanghai very quickly after the incident to help safeguard the International Settlement in the city because the KMT was carrying out sweeps of the city and there was worry that violence will spill into the International Settlement. This event led to the creation of the Shanghai Special Detachment of the SNLF.
