Very Rare Antique Japanese 1921 Future Showa Emperor Europe Tour Battleship Katori Navy Sake Cup
This is a very rare antique Japanese military sake cup, decorated with an anchor and the imperial banner - representing the imperial household. The words on the cup are "Crown Prince His Imperial Highness, European Tour Commemoration" "Imperial Abroad Warship Katori". This is the first Katori - the battleship, the last British battleship built for the IJN (the Kongo class was technically not battleships when they were built). The sailor's name Makihara is on the back. The cherry blossom shape on the cup is lightly embossed.
This trip took six months and he went to UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy. It was the first time for a Japanese crown prince to travel out of the country in a long, long time. It was also quite controversial at the time due to the cost and perceived risks, especially because of the apparent mental issues of the Taisho emperor.
Any cup related to the imperial person - having served as the lead ship for the emperor during a naval review, for this trip, etc, are exceptionally rare and sought after by Japanese collectors.
