Very Rare Antique Japanese Military 1887 Marksmanship Award Lacquer Army Sake Cup
This is an antique Japanese military sake cup, decorated with a badge of the Order of Rising Sun on the front. The words on the back of the cup are "Excellence Award" and inside the base is the name of the maker. The lid of the case has the big word "Award" and the stamp on the bottom left is also the maker's stamp. Under the lid are the words "Meiji 21st Year April 17th Nagoya Castle 3rd Battlement Shooting Range" "Gifted for gathering the highest points in the regimental marksmanship competition" and the big red seal is "Honorary Award". There is a sheet of paper with handwriting on it - can't quite make it out. The other sheet is a description of the maker of the cup and the lacquerware they produce. On the back of the box are the words "Award Winner" and the full name Hosoe Fujiichi. This is the same family as the other cup I'm selling, also a Nagoya infantry marksmanship from the next year awarded to another Hosose. It's not a very common family name, so it's quite likely they're related somehow.
Size: 4.75" across
