Very Rare Antique Japanese Military 1938 Submarine Tender Jingei Guangdong Attack Navy Sake Cup Set
This is a very rare set of antique Japanese military sake cups. The set consists of a stand, a three step stacking cup set, and also a sake pourer. The items are decorated with the "Three gentlemen" - bamboo, plum blossom, and pine trees. They represent the three virtues of a gentleman. Under the lid of the stand are the words "Showa 13th Year Guangdong Campaign Commemoration, Warship Jingei". The Jingei was the submarine tender of the IJN. It was a mobile supply depot as well as the headquarters of the navy's submarine force. In 1938 it accompanied the China theater of operations fleet, and would've participated in the campaign to take Guangdong (Wikipedia is wrong on this). I found reference to Jingei in the list of ships involved in the campaign, and there's also a map of the landing force - basically, they landed east of Hong Kong and pushed on to Guangzhou from there.
Anything involving submarines is extremely rare for the IJN - the navy wasn't huge on submarines, and they generally involved very few individuals.
Condition: The cups are in mint condition. The stand has two spots where there's a bit of cracking of the lacquer paint. The handle of the pour kettle is cracked and repaired with tape - please see pictures.
Size: The stand is 7" tall, 6.5" x 6.5". The cups are 4.5", 3.75" and 3" across. The pot is about 6.5" x 4.5"
