This is an antique Japanese military sake cup, decorated with a very nicely done picture of a soldier in Meiji era uniform with two horses, while he is reading or writing something. This is an old trope - the scholar warrior resting under a tree, only updated with modern uniform. The words are "9th Field Artillery Regiment" and on the back is the soldier's name Kataoka with the name of the kiln Kutani. The details on the cup are superb.
